The Circle of Reactions

Danish newspapers published caricatures several months ago.

Muslim nations react with anger ... several months late.

Some newspapers apologize.

Danish products are boycotted ... possibly the only boycott in the past decade that has actually worked.

French newspapers decide that enough is enough, and publish the same caricatures.

Rumors are now spreading that there will be anti-Muslim protests in Copenhagen, in which Danish youth may burn copies of the Quran (possible on Saturday).

...

What a fascinating world we live in.

  • It is a fascinating world for those that find reactionary ideals appealing:-) What a sad commentary about the state of civil dialogue ,or lack thereof, in our region of the world!!!!

  • It is not only a sad commentary on our region but also the western world. Similiar caricatures of Jews or Jesus would have been roundly condemned in the West and would have been criminalized under existing hate laws. Muslims are now fair game for the bigots of society.

In the last week I was shocked by the remarks of a lawyer on the other side of a business transaction. He asked me what I thought of the electoral victory by Hamas. I replied politely that it was unexpected. He then said that we should nuke those gooks in "Iran" before it is too late. It took me a couple of hours to calm down my repressed anger.

Muslims are sensitive to such attacks and distortions in the media but they are also angry about lots of other things- Palestine, Iraq, hunger, corruption, human rights,. refugees, repressive regimes, etc. If any of you have been to a mosque lately you will understand what I mean.

They feel under attack on every level. They are reacting by becoming politically active in their communities and building their Muslim society.

Some of the fanatics are making their circles smaller but the majority of Muslims realize the challenges they face and are trying to make their community more inclusive and tolerant.

The Muslim world may be in crisis today but the next generation will definitely be transformed by Islam , "peak" oil and democracy.

    Issam
